Göreme Open-Air Museum
Goreme Open Air Museum is one of the major places to visit in Cappadocia. The most important feature of Goreme is the breath-taking cave-churches. The Christian monks who lived in the Middle Ages built these churches by carving the soft volcanic rocks. The monks had the Byzantine cultural influence, therefore they adorned the walls of their churches with the Byzantine style of religious art. The hermits regarded Cappadocia as one of their most important base for the monasteries. The primary purpose of these men was to live in seclusion. Cappadocia had been a perfect place for living this kind of life.
