Instead of fighting for space at the Oia castle, watch the sunset from the Oia to Fira hiking trail, from a caldera restaurant, or take a sunset sailing cruise for a private experience.
Santorini produces unique Assyrtiko wine from ancient vines. Visit Santo, Venetsanos, or Sigalas wineries for tastings with caldera views. Best from May to October.
The 10km caldera rim trail from Fira to Oia takes 3-5 hours and offers the most spectacular views. Best in spring or autumn — avoid midday in summer.
Red Beach is iconic but tiny and crowded. Perissa and Perivolos offer long black sand beaches with sun beds. Kamari has the best facilities and water sports.
Stay in Fira or Perissa instead of Oia for much lower prices. Visit in May or October for 50%+ savings on caldera hotels compared to July-August rates.

May, June, and September are the best months. You get warm sunny weather (24-28°C), swimmable seas, all services open, and far fewer crowds and lower prices than the July-August peak season.
It depends on what you want. November to March is very quiet with most businesses closed and limited ferry service. However, you get dramatic caldera views without a single tourist, rock-bottom prices, and an authentic local atmosphere. Fira stays partially open year-round.
Three to four days is ideal. Day 1 for Oia and sunset, Day 2 for the Fira-to-Oia hike and wine tasting, Day 3 for beaches and a boat trip to the volcano, Day 4 for Akrotiri archaeological site and relaxation.
May, early June, and October offer beautiful sunsets without the summer crush. In July-August, arrive at the Oia castle 90 minutes early for a good spot, or skip it entirely for a caldera restaurant or sunset cruise.
The sea is comfortable for swimming from late May (20°C) through October (22°C), with peak warmth in August-September (24-25°C). April and November are possible but chilly for most swimmers.
High-speed ferry from Piraeus takes about 5 hours. Regular ferries take 8 hours and are cheaper. Flights from Athens take 45 minutes and are often comparable in price to high-speed ferries if booked early.
