The Mortuary Temple of Amenhotep III, located on the West Bank of Luxor, Egypt, is a grand yet partially submerged archaeological site that once showcased the glory of ancient Egypt’s New Kingdom. Built during the reign of Pharaoh Amenhotep III (1386-1349 BCE), the temple was originally one of Egypt’s largest, covering 86 acres, but was largely dismantled by floods and time. Visitors are welcomed by the iconic Colossi of Memnon—two towering stone statues that once guarded the temple entrance. Excavations continue to reveal insights into the temple’s architecture and its dedication to Amenhotep III’s divinity, reflecting the pharaoh’s desire to immortalize his legacy. The site offers visitors a glimpse into Egypt’s architectural prowess, though much of its former grandeur is now preserved only in its ruins.
