In the afternoon, explore the Zelve Open Air Museum, a remarkable complex of cave dwellings, churches, and monasteries carved into the rock that reveals the region's deep monastic past. Descend through its network of tunnels, living quarters, ventilation shafts, and storage rooms, all reflecting the impressive engineering skill of its builders.

From Derinkuyu, continue to the striking Ihlara Valley, once known as Peristerema. Here you will see the famous rock-cut churches tucked into the canyon walls and enjoy a peaceful 4 km hike along the Melendiz River, with the green gorge scenery surrounding you at every turn.

After the walk, pause for a relaxed lunch at a traditional Turkish restaurant within the valley, where you can sample local dishes in a calm natural setting.

Important Information

  • Hot air balloon rides in Cappadocia are not included in this package but can be arranged on request. Flights are weather-dependent and may be canceled by the aviation authority, so we recommend booking your earliest available morning to allow for rescheduling.
  • Your tour begins with a private transfer from Kayseri Airport (ASR) to your hotel in Cappadocia. Please share your exact flight arrival time in advance so we can arrange the pick-up to match each family member's arrival.
  • The Blue Mosque and other mosques are closed to visitors during prayer times, particularly Friday prayers (approximately 12:00-14:00). Your private guide will time your Istanbul Old City visit accordingly.
  • A modest dress code is required when visiting mosques: women should cover their head, shoulders, and knees, and all visitors must remove their shoes. Headscarves are usually available at mosque entrances.
  • Comfortable walking shoes are essential for the Cappadocia valley tours and underground cities, which involve uneven terrain, steep steps, and narrow passages. The underground cities can feel confined, so please advise us in advance if any family member is claustrophobic or has limited mobility.
  • The Cappadocia valleys offer spectacular viewpoints but can involve walking and standing for extended periods. The pace of all private tours can be tailored to suit your family, including younger children.
  • Cappadocia experiences hot summers and cold, occasionally snowy winters. Pack layered clothing, sun protection, and warm items for early mornings depending on your travel season.
  • Day 8 is a free day in Istanbul to explore at your own pace. Your guide can recommend family-friendly activities or arrange optional excursions tailored to your interests.
  • The Grand Bazaar, Spice Market, and Gold/Jewelry Market are excellent for souvenir shopping, but bargaining is expected. Carry some Turkish Lira, as small vendors may not accept cards.
  • Turkey uses Type C and F electrical outlets (European standard, 220V). Travellers from the US/UK should bring an adapter.
  • All foreign visitors must hold a passport valid for at least six months beyond the travel date. Please check whether your nationality requires an e-Visa for Turkey before departure.

Please contact our team as early as possible, and we will do our best to assist you with changing your tour date.

Is the hot air balloon ride included in this Cappadocia tour?

The famous Cappadocia hot air balloon ride is not included in this itinerary, but it is one of the most popular optional experiences and we highly recommend it for families. Since balloon flights take place at sunrise and are separate from your daily guided tours, we can arrange a reputable flight on one of your Cappadocia mornings upon request, subject to weather and availability. Just let us know in advance and we will tailor it for your family.

Are the Cappadocia underground cities suitable for children?

Yes, the Kaymakli and Derinkuyu underground cities are wonderful for families, with carved tunnels and chambers that children often find fascinating. Some passages are low and narrow, so a little care is needed, but your private guide paces the visit comfortably and can choose the most family-friendly route based on the day's timing and crowds. If anyone prefers to skip the deeper sections, your guide can easily adjust the experience.

What should we wear when visiting the Blue Mosque and Hagia Sophia?

When visiting the Blue Mosque, Hagia Sophia and other religious sites in Sultanahmet, modest dress is required — shoulders and knees should be covered for everyone, and women are asked to cover their heads with a scarf. It's helpful to carry a light scarf and wear easily removable shoes, as you'll take them off before entering the prayer areas. Your private guide will advise on timing to avoid prayer hours so your family can explore comfortably.

How does the journey from Cappadocia to Istanbul work?

On Day 5, a private transfer collects your family from your hotel in Cappadocia and brings you to Kayseri Airport (ASR), timed around your confirmed domestic flight to Istanbul. Upon landing, another private transfer is waiting to take you directly to your Istanbul hotel, so the entire journey is seamless and unhurried. The short domestic flight is the most comfortable way to connect the two regions, leaving the rest of the day free to settle in.

Are meals included on this tour?

Four lunches at local restaurants are included on your touring days in Cappadocia (Days 2, 3 and 4) and during the Istanbul Old City tour (Day 6), with menus that suit families nicely. Breakfast is typically provided by your hotels, while dinners and meals on free or transfer days are not included, giving you the flexibility to dine as you wish. Your guide is always happy to recommend family-friendly restaurants near your hotel.

Do I need a visa to visit Turkey?

Many nationalities can enter Turkey visa-free or via the convenient online e-Visa system, which takes only a few minutes to complete before travel. Requirements depend on your passport, so we recommend checking the official Turkish e-Visa portal well ahead of your trip. Please ensure your passport is valid for at least six months beyond your travel dates.

What is the best time of year to visit Cappadocia and Istanbul?

Spring (April to June) and autumn (September to November) are the most pleasant seasons, offering mild weather ideal for exploring valleys, underground cities and Istanbul's outdoor sites in comfort. Summer is warm and lively, while winter brings a magical snow-dusted landscape to Cappadocia, though balloon flights can be more weather-dependent. Whatever season you choose, your private guide adjusts the daily pace to keep your family comfortable throughout.
