Derinkuyu Underground City, located in Cappadocia, Turkey, is the largest and deepest of the region’s underground cities. This multi-level city, extending 60 meters below ground, was built during the Byzantine era to protect inhabitants from invasions. With its labyrinth of tunnels, living quarters, kitchens, stables, churches, and even a ventilation system, it could shelter up to 20,000 people.
