Hanging Church

Kom Ghorab, Misr Al Qadimah, Cairo Governorate 11632, Egypt

Suspended above the ruins of a Roman fortress, the Hanging Church seems to float on air. Its name comes from a remarkable feat of engineering: the nave was built atop the gatehouse of the ancient Babylon Fortress in Cairo, leaving the church suspended over a passageway. Step through the wooden doors, and you enter one of the oldest and most beloved Christian sanctuaries in Egypt.

A Church With Ancient Roots

Known in Arabic as El Muallaqa, the Hanging Church dates back to the third or fourth century, making it possibly the oldest church in Egypt still in use. It served as the residence of the Coptic Patriarch from the 11th to the 14th century, placing it at the very heart of Coptic Christianity for generations. Over the centuries it has been rebuilt and restored many times, yet it has kept its distinctive design and spiritual gravity. Its perch above the Roman fortress gate gives it an almost weightless quality, a sense of rising between earth and heaven.

What to See and Experience

Begin in the marble courtyard, where modern mosaics depicting biblical scenes catch the sunlight. Inside, twin rows of slender columns guide your eye toward three ornate sanctuaries. Look up at the wooden roof, designed to resemble the inverted hull of Noah’s Ark, a quiet reminder of refuge and faith. The pulpit, carved from white and black marble and supported by thirteen pillars representing Christ and his apostles, is a masterwork of medieval craftsmanship.

Don’t miss the small panel of glass set into the floor, which lets you peer down to the Roman towers below and understand exactly why the church “hangs.” Icons in glowing reds and golds, some centuries old, line the walls and fill the air with a sense of devotion that has endured for over a thousand years.

Practical Visitor Tips

The Hanging Church sits in the Coptic Cairo district, an easy walk from the Coptic Museum and Ben Ezra Synagogue. Allow about 30 to 45 minutes for your visit. Mornings are calmest, before tour groups arrive. Dress modestly, with shoulders and knees covered, and remember it remains an active place of worship, so keep voices low.

A Sanctuary That Lingers

Few places weave faith, history, and ingenuity together as gracefully as the Hanging Church. To stand beneath its ark-shaped ceiling is to feel the quiet pulse of two millennia.
