Great Pyramid of Cheops: Tickets, Hours & Visiting Tips

The Great Pyramid of Cheops, also called the Pyramid of Khufu, is the largest of the three main pyramids on the Giza Plateau, on the western edge of Greater Cairo, Egypt. Your plateau ticket lets you walk around the outside. Going inside the pyramid needs a separate ticket, and those are limited each day, so plan to arrive when the gates open if you want to go in.

Why the Great Pyramid matters

The pyramid was built as the tomb of the Fourth Dynasty king Khufu, whom Greek writers called Cheops. It is the only one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World still standing. It shares the plateau with the pyramids of Khafre (Chephren) and Menkaure and with the Great Sphinx. The whole area falls within a UNESCO World Heritage listing for the Memphis pyramid fields. Egypt’s Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities notes that
the sarcophagus in which Khufu was once laid to rest can still be seen in the upper of these two rooms, the King’s Chamber.

What to see on the plateau

A standard plateau ticket covers the outside of the pyramids and the area around them. One recent guide says it includes the
exteriors of all three pyramids, the Sphinx, the shuttle loop
. Most visitors walk the base of the Great Pyramid first, then head to the panoramic viewpoint for the classic photo of all three pyramids together.

Inside, the passages are steep and tight.
If you have claustrophobia, this is not the experience for you — the passages are not just narrow but hot and slow-moving.
Daily numbers are capped. Several recent guides say tickets can sell out early on busy days,
especially December and January

Tickets are sold through the ministry’s official booking platform, and you can also buy them at the gate. Recent guides report that
all payments are card only — cash is no longer accepted at the ticket gates.
Bring a card that works abroad, and check payment rules before your visit. Sources list different prices for going inside the pyramid, and one older official schedule showed a midday break for interior visits. Check both before you plan your day around them. The official ticketing site also says

Getting there and moving around

main entrance

the visitor centre on the Fayoum Highway, south side of the plateau
. Independent travelers usually arrive by car or taxi from central Cairo. Allow extra time for traffic.

. Many visitors leave through the Sphinx side of the site, so arrange your pickup point ahead of time.

Walking, mobility and families

Expect sand, stone, slopes and uneven ground. One visitor guide estimates about 2.5 km of walking for a highlights visit and about 4 km for a more complete circuit. The shuttles cut down on walking but don’t remove it. Travelers who use wheelchairs or have limited mobility should ask in advance how far they can get, because the interior passages are not suited to them.

Families can visit the outside fairly easily. Keep an eye on young children near the uneven stone bases, and think carefully before taking them into the cramped, hot interior.

Weather, light and timing

Most of the plateau has no shade.
In terms of season, October through April is ideal, with mild temperatures of 18–28°C.
In summer, plan the outdoor part for early in the day. Arriving at opening also helps with crowds:
the difference in crowd levels between 7:00 AM and 10:00 AM is enormous. Early morning also gives the best photographic light.
Bring water, a hat and sunscreen.

A realistic route

Arrive at the main visitor center at opening and decide right away whether to buy an interior ticket.
Visit the Great Pyramid first: walk around the outside, then go in if you have a ticket.
Take the shuttle to the panoramic viewpoint for the view of all three pyramids.
Continue past the Khafre and Menkaure pyramids to the Sphinx and the nearby Valley Temple.
Leave by late morning and spend the hot middle of the day at the Grand Egyptian Museum if you’ve booked a timed entry.

Independent visit or guided tour?

You can visit on your own if you’re comfortable buying tickets, paying by card and arranging your own transportation. A guide is more useful if you want historical context or prefer to have the logistics handled.
