The Hanging Church, officially known as Saint Virgin Mary’s Coptic Orthodox Church, is one of the oldest and most celebrated churches in Egypt. Built during the 3rd century, it is famously called the “Hanging” Church because it was constructed above the southern gatehouse of the Roman Babylon Fortress, giving it a suspended appearance. The church features exquisite wooden screens, icons, and a marble pulpit, showcasing the artistry of early Coptic design. Historically, it served as the residence of the Coptic Patriarch for centuries and remains a central place of worship. Today, it attracts both pilgrims and travelers, offering a glimpse into Egypt’s Christian heritage and architectural brilliance.
