A City Built Nine Times Over

The most famous layer — Troy VII, widely believed to be the city of Homer’s epic — fell around 1180 BCE, likely the result of warfare or siege. German archaeologist Heinrich Schliemann began excavations here in 1870, controversially blasting through layers in his rush to find “Priam’s Treasure.” His methods were destructive, but his discovery electrified the world. Today, the Ancient City of Troy is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, recognized since 1998.

The massive wooden Trojan Horse replica greets you at the entrance — dramatic, towering, and impossible to resist photographing. Beyond it, the real magic begins. Walk along the ancient fortification walls of Troy VI, where enormous stone blocks still hold firm after more than 3,000 years. Peer into the Houses of Troy I, some of the oldest residential structures in the region. Examine the Sacrificial Altars of Troy, where rituals once took place under open skies. The on-site museum displays artifacts, interactive exhibits, and detailed models that bring each archaeological layer into sharp focus.

Practical Tips for Your Visit

Spring (April–May) and early autumn (September–October) offer the most comfortable weather for exploring the open-air site. Allow at least two hours — more if you want to absorb the museum thoroughly. The Ancient City of Troy sits about 30 kilometers south of Çanakkale, making it easy to combine with a visit to the Gallipoli Peninsula across the Dardanelles.
