Asclepieion of Pergamon

The Asclepeion of Pergamon is one of the most renowned healing centers of the ancient world, often celebrated as the birthplace of holistic medicine and psychotherapy. Located in modern-day Bergama, this UNESCO World Heritage site was the sanctuary of the famous physician Galen. The complex was designed to heal patients through mud baths, herbal remedies, dream interpretation, and the soothing sound of water. A highlight for visitors is the long, vaulted underground tunnel, where patients were treated with autosuggestion. The site also features a beautifully preserved Roman theater, a library, and the Temple of Asclepius, all operating under the ancient decree: “Death is forbidden to enter here.
