The morning light spills across the rocky valleys of Cappadocia, catching the honey-colored cliff face of Çavuşin Village in central Turkey. Here, ancient cave dwellings honeycomb a towering rock outcrop, abandoned homes staring out over orchards and weathered stone. It feels quieter than the region’s famous open-air museums, and that silence is part of its magic.
A Village Carved From Time
Çavuşin Village holds one of the oldest sacred sites in the region. The Church of St. John the Baptist, perched high on the cliff, dates to roughly the 5th century and ranks among the earliest churches in Cappadocia. Centuries of Byzantine monks and farmers shaped the soft volcanic tuff into chapels, storerooms, and houses connected by tunnels and stairways. The old village remained inhabited until the mid-20th century, when rockfalls and erosion forced residents to relocate to the modern settlement below. What remains is a layered record of faith, farming, and survival written directly into the stone.
What to See and Experience
Climb the worn steps and you’ll find faded frescoes still clinging to chapel walls, their reds and ochres softened by a thousand years. The Çavuşin Church (Church of St. John the Baptist) rewards the steeper hike with sweeping sightlines across the valley. Lower down, the abandoned cave homes invite slow exploration—peer into hollowed rooms once warmed by hearths and stacked with grain.
Çavuşin sits along the celebrated walking route between Göreme and Paşabağ Monks Valley, with the Red Valley and Rose Valley trailheads close by. Many hot air balloons drift directly over the village at dawn, making it a stunning spot for sunrise photography.
Practical Visitor Tips
Allow 45 minutes to an hour for the old village, longer if you plan to walk into the surrounding valleys. Spring (April–May) and fall (September–October) offer the most comfortable temperatures. Arrive early to catch the balloons and avoid midday heat. Wear sturdy shoes—the rock steps can be slick and uneven—and bring water, as shade is limited up top.
Çavuşin Village rewards travelers who linger, listen, and look closely at the stories carved in stone. Ready to wander Cappadocia’s quiet corners and famous valleys alike? Explore our 6-Day Istanbul & Cappadocia Tour or start planning at our Plan My Trip page.
