The Step Pyramid of Djoser serves as a monumental milestone in architectural history, standing as the earliest colossus built entirely of stone. Constructed during the 27th century BC in the Saqqara Necropolis, this 62-meter-high structure was designed by the visionary architect Imhotep for Pharaoh Djoser. Unlike previous mud-brick mastabas, Imhotep stacked six mastabas of decreasing size to create the iconic “stepped” appearance. The pyramid sits at the heart of a vast funerary complex surrounded by a limestone wall, featuring ceremonial courtyards and intricate subterranean tunnels that stretch for nearly six kilometers, symbolizing the pharaoh’s eternal journey to the afterlife.
