Alaaddin Mosque

Alaaddin Tepesi, Selçuk Cd., 42250 Karatay/Konya, Turkey.

On Konya’s windswept Alaaddin Hill, the call to prayer rises over stone walls that have watched sultans, scholars, and travelers pass for nearly 800 years. Alaaddin Mosque is not only one of the oldest Seljuk monuments in Turkey; it is the spiritual crown of Konya, a city where faith, poetry, and empire once met.

Historical and Cultural Context

The origins of Alaaddin Mosque date back to the late 12th century, during the rise of the Seljuk Sultanate of Rum. Construction began under Sultan Rukn al-Din Mesud I and continued through the reigns of several Seljuk rulers, with major work completed under Sultan Alaaddin Keykubad I in the early 13th century.

Konya served as the Seljuk capital from 1097 to 1243, and this mosque became its ceremonial heart. Within its grounds are the tombs of Seljuk sultans, including Kilij Arslan II and Alaaddin Keykubad I, whose rule marked one of the most prosperous periods of medieval Anatolia. Long before Ottoman domes reshaped skylines, Seljuk architects were experimenting here with wood, stone, tile, and geometry.

What to See and Experience

Approach Alaaddin Mosque slowly. Its exterior is quiet and restrained, built with pale stone and fragments reused from earlier Byzantine and Roman structures. Look closely at the entrance portal: the carved details reveal the Seljuks’ love of symmetry, pattern, and refined craftsmanship.

Inside, the atmosphere is hushed and earthy. Wooden columns, a flat timber ceiling, and soft light create a sense of calm rather than grandeur. The mihrab, decorated with turquoise Seljuk tiles, draws the eye with cool color and delicate artistry. In the courtyard, the sultans’ mausoleums remind visitors that this was both a place of worship and a royal sanctuary.
