The Mortuary Temple of Hatshepsut, also known as Djeser-Djeseru (“Holy of Holies”), is a masterpiece of ancient architecture located beneath the towering limestone cliffs of Deir el-Bahari. Built during the 18th Dynasty by the architect Senenmut, this structure is renowned for its unique design, which departs from the massive geometry of the Old Kingdom. The temple features three massive, graduated terraces connected by central ramps, creating a dramatic visual harmony with the natural mountain backdrop.
Visitors can explore the famous “Punt Colonnade,” which features intricate reliefs depicting the Queen’s famous trading expedition to the Land of Punt, showcasing exotic trees and animals. The “Birth Colonnade” narrates the legend of Hatshepsut’s divine origin as the daughter of the god Amun. Key areas include the Chapels of Anubis and Hathor, and the Sanctuary of Amun at the temple’s pinnacle. The site offers a profound glimpse into the reign of one of Egypt’s most powerful female pharaohs.
