Open-Jaw: Istanbul In, Izmir Out
Fly into Istanbul and depart from Izmir Airport (near Ephesus). This follows the natural route and eliminates backtracking.
Istanbul • Cappadocia • Konya • Pamukkale • Ephesus
This 9-day active heritage route combines three Istanbul days with Cappadocia, Konya, Pamukkale, and Ephesus. Konya breaks the long central-Anatolia road journey into two stages, but Days 6–9 still include consecutive transfers and the final Ephesus visit shares a day with the airport transfer.
Arrive at Istanbul Airport and transfer to Sultanahmet. Visit Hagia Sophia and the Blue Mosque, then descend into the atmospheric Basilica Cistern. Walk the ancient Hippodrome. Take your time with a leisurely lunch at a lokanta — you have three days in this incredible city. Evening stroll through the illuminated Sultanahmet square.
Morning at Topkapi Palace exploring the treasury, harem, and gardens with Bosphorus views. Visit the Grand Bazaar at leisure — with 4,000+ shops, you can spend hours here. Stop at Suleymaniye Mosque for stunning Golden Horn panoramas. Browse the Spice Market for Turkish delight, saffron, and dried fruits. Dinner at a traditional meyhane with meze and raki.
Morning Bosphorus cruise past palaces and Ottoman mansions. Climb Galata Tower for panoramic views. Take the ferry to the Asian side: explore Kadikoy's colorful market streets, artisan cafes, and the hip Moda waterfront. This is where Istanbulites actually live and eat — a very different vibe from the tourist areas. Return to the European side for an evening hammam experience.
Morning flight from Istanbul to Cappadocia (Kayseri or Nevsehir airport). Check into your cave hotel in Goreme. Spend the afternoon exploring Goreme village, visiting small cave churches, browsing onyx jewelry shops, and settling into the unique landscape. Watch sunset from a panoramic viewpoint. Traditional Cappadocian dinner with testi kebab.
If booked and cleared to fly, take an optional pre-dawn balloon flight. Visit the Goreme Open Air Museum (UNESCO), continue through visitor-accessible sections of Derinkuyu Underground City, and explore Pasabag (Monks Valley). Keep the afternoon flexible for a walk or separately booked activity.
Morning hike through Ihlara Valley and visit Selime Monastery before driving to Konya. Visit the Mevlana Museum, associated with the life and legacy of Rumi and the Mevlevi tradition. Attend an evening Sema ceremony only if the dated official or venue schedule confirms a performance; keep a free evening as the fallback.
Visit the Karatay Tile Works Museum for Seljuk mosaic-tile craftsmanship, then walk around Alaeddin Hill or choose another confirmed-open Konya museum. Do not rely on the Ince Minare Museum without checking its current status. Drive to Pamukkale, check into a thermal hotel, and keep a sunset travertine visit optional if arrival time permits.
Spend the morning on the designated barefoot sections of the Pamukkale travertines and explore Hierapolis, including its theater and necropolis. Verify the separately ticketed Antique Pool's operating status before relying on swimming. After lunch, drive to the Aegean coast for an evening in Kusadasi.
Morning at Ephesus: walk down marble Curetes Street to the Library of Celsus, explore the 24,000-seat Great Theater, and visit the Terrace Houses with preserved mosaics and frescoes. Stop at the Temple of Artemis ruins (one of the Seven Ancient Wonders). Optional visit to the House of the Virgin Mary on the hilltop above Ephesus. Transfer to Izmir Airport (1 hour) for departure.

Fly into Istanbul and depart from Izmir Airport (near Ephesus). This follows the natural route and eliminates backtracking.
Ceremony dates, venues, admission and photography rules vary. Confirm the dated official or venue schedule before building the evening around a performance.
Day 3 on the Asian side (Kadikoy, Moda) is what sets a 9-day trip apart. This is where locals go for weekend brunch, street food, and waterfront walks — a completely different Istanbul experience.
Book for Day 5 so Day 6 morning is your backup if weather cancels. Do not wait until your last morning.
Carry a light layer for mosque and religious-site visits, and follow the dress and photography rules posted by each venue. City streets do not have a special visitor dress code.

This version adds Konya and a third Istanbul day, including the Asian side. It offers more depth in Istanbul, but the Konya–Pamukkale–Ephesus sequence remains active rather than fully relaxed.
Use the planning ranges above as a starting point and verify live prices for your dates. Hotel category, domestic flights, road transfers, ceremony tickets and an optional balloon flight create the largest differences. International flights are excluded.
Konya is closely associated with Rumi and the Mevlevi tradition. The Mevlana Museum and the city's Seljuk architecture and tile work provide a distinct historical stop on this overland route between Cappadocia and Pamukkale.
Konya can be used as an intermediate stop on the overland Cappadocia-to-Pamukkale route. The dated drive times, rest stops and traffic still matter, and the two consecutive transfer days make this an active sequence rather than a relaxed break.
April-June and September-October. Spring (especially April-May) is ideal for Cappadocia's wildflowers and comfortable walking temperatures at Ephesus. Autumn (September-October) offers warm Aegean coast weather with fewer crowds.
A guide is not mandatory, but this route has several linked transfers with limited margin for disruption. Independent travelers should verify each dated connection and use flexible bookings. A guided arrangement can simplify the Cappadocia-Konya-Pamukkale-Ephesus loop while Istanbul remains easy to plan independently.
