9-Day Morocco Tour: Marrakech, Sahara Desert, Fez & Chefchaouen

Welcome to Marrakech. On arrival at Marrakech Menara Airport, you will be met and transferred to your riad. The transfer is arranged so you can settle in without needing to navigate the city or arrange transportation after your flight.

Once you have checked in, the rest of the day is free. Use the time to rest after travel, have a simple meal nearby, or take an unhurried first walk through the streets around your accommodation. Marrakech can feel busy at first, especially around the old city, so there is no need to pack your first afternoon with plans.

If you choose to go out, keep it flexible and allow time to find your bearings before the guided sightseeing tomorrow. Your riad is your base for the evening, with time to prepare for the road journey that begins after your Marrakech visit. Overnight in Marrakech.

After breakfast, around 8:30 am, you will be picked up from your hotel. Begin in Marrakech with the Saadian Tombs, then continue to Bahia Palace, where carved plasterwork, painted ceilings, and inner courtyards show the detail used in late nineteenth-century Moroccan residences. Stop for lunch independently during the day before continuing with the visit.

Later, visit Majorelle Garden, followed by the remains of El Badi Palace. You will also see the traditional tanneries, where hides are processed and dyed, before continuing to Menara Gardens. These stops give you a useful contrast between enclosed palace spaces, formal gardens, and working parts of the city.

Finish near Koutoubia Mosque and Jemaa el-Fna. In the evening, the square fills with food stalls, performers, and small crowds moving between the medina lanes. You will have time to walk through the souks before returning to your riad. Overnight in Marrakech.

Leave Marrakech after breakfast and travel into the High Atlas Mountains. The road climbs toward Tizi n’Tichka Pass, crossing a high section of the range before descending toward southern Morocco. Stops along the way break up the drive and give you time to look at the changing terrain and mountain settlements.

Continue through Ouarzazate to Ait Ben Haddou, a fortified settlement of earth-built homes and narrow lanes. You will have free time to explore it at your own pace. The route also passes Taourirt Kasbah and the film studios near Ouarzazate before turning east toward the road known for its many kasbahs.

In the afternoon, travel through Skoura and Kelaat M’Gouna before reaching the Dades Valley. The final stretch follows a valley route lined with small farms, stone buildings, and dry hills. Arrive in the Dades area, check in, and have dinner at your hotel. Overnight in the Dades Valley.

After breakfast, leave the Dades Valley and continue east through Tinghir, an oasis town with palms and cultivated plots beside the road. Your first main stop is Todra Gorge, where a walk on the gorge floor puts you between tall limestone walls. Take your time here before the longer desert-bound drive resumes.

Pass through Tinjdad and Erfoud, towns associated with date palms and fossil workshops. The road becomes drier as you approach Merzouga, and the dunes of Erg Chebbi come into view. This is the point where the trip shifts from road travel and valleys to the open sand of the Sahara.

Later, leave the vehicle at the edge of the dunes and travel by camel toward the desert camp. You may also use a 4×4 transfer to and from camp if preferred. Arrive before nightfall, have dinner, and hear Berber drumming and music at camp. Overnight in a desert camp near Merzouga.

Wake early at the camp for sunrise over Erg Chebbi. The morning light changes quickly on the dunes, so it is worth stepping outside before breakfast. After eating, return by camel to the edge of the sand, or use the 4×4 transfer option, where your driver will be waiting to continue the day around Merzouga.

Travel to Khamlia, a village known for Gnawa music, a style with deep percussion and call-and-response singing linked to communities of sub-Saharan ancestry. Continue on desert tracks toward nomadic encampments, where the visit focuses on how families manage daily life in this dry region. Routes can vary with conditions and local access.

Lunch is not included today and can be arranged during the route. Later, stop at Hassi Lbeid, an oasis near the dunes, before returning to your riad in the Merzouga area. The afternoon is free for rest, a walk near the sand, or sandboarding if conditions allow. Overnight in Merzouga.

After breakfast, leave Merzouga for a full travel day to Fez. The first section passes through Erfoud, then follows the route north toward the Ziz Valley. Look for the long bands of date palms below the road, set between dry slopes and small settlements built along the river corridor.

Continue to Midelt for a break before entering the Middle Atlas Mountains. The temperature and scenery change noticeably as the route climbs. In the cedar forest areas, you may see Barbary macaques, but wildlife sightings are never certain and should not be expected on a fixed schedule.

Pass through Ifrane, known for its sloping roofs and cooler mountain setting, before continuing to Fez. Arrive later in the day and check in to your riad. After the long drive, the evening is deliberately left open, giving you time for dinner, rest, and preparation for the next stage of the route. Overnight in Fez.

After breakfast, leave Fez and travel north to Volubilis, the remains of a Roman city with streets, columns, public buildings, and surviving mosaic floors. You will have time to walk through the site and see how the ruins sit across a broad agricultural plain rather than inside a modern urban center.

Continue to Moulay Idriss, an important pilgrimage town, then travel on to Meknes. Here, see Bab Mansour, the monumental gate facing the main square, and the Mausoleum of Moulay Ismail. These stops introduce the imperial architecture of Meknes before the road turns north into the mountains.

Cross the Rif Mountains and arrive in Chefchaouen later in the day. The town is built on a slope, and its blue-painted lanes are best explored slowly on foot. After checking in, you have free time to walk the medina, browse small shops, or settle into a cafe near the main square. Overnight in Chefchaouen.

After breakfast, leave Chefchaouen and drive south through the Rif Mountains toward Rabat. This is one of the longest road days of the trip, so the route is planned around travel time, comfort stops, and time for the capital’s principal landmarks before continuing to Marrakech.

In Rabat, visit Hassan Tower, the unfinished minaret of a planned mosque, and the neighboring Mausoleum of Mohammed V. Continue to Kasbah of the Udayas, a walled quarter above the Bouregreg River. Lunch is not included and can be taken during the stop in Rabat before the afternoon journey resumes.

Continue by road to Marrakech, passing from the northern part of the country toward the inland plains. Arrival is expected later in the day, depending on traffic and the timing of stops. Check in to your riad for your final evening in Morocco, with time to pack or take a last walk nearby. Overnight in Marrakech.

After breakfast, your time in Marrakech is free until your scheduled transfer to Marrakech Menara Airport. Please have your luggage ready at the agreed collection time. The transfer is arranged to take you from your riad to the airport so you can finish the trip without arranging transportation on departure day.

If your flight leaves later, you may have time for a final independent walk through the medina or last-minute shopping. Keep your plans close to your accommodation and allow enough time to return, collect your bags, and meet the driver. The narrow lanes can be confusing with luggage, so it is easier to do any final exploring on foot and travel light.

Your Morocco route has taken you from the old quarters of Marrakech through the High Atlas, the Dades and Todra areas, the Sahara near Merzouga, Fez, Chefchaouen, and Rabat. After your airport transfer, the itinerary ends. No overnight accommodation is included on this day.
