The Trojan Horse is one of the best-known symbols of Troy, but travelers should distinguish two modern replicas in Çanakkale Province. One stands at the Troy archaeological site near Tevfikiye; the horse used in the 2004 film Troy stands on the waterfront in central Çanakkale.

The story and the replicas

The wooden horse belongs to the literary tradition of the Trojan War: Greek soldiers hide inside an apparent gift and enter the fortified city. The replicas are modern interpretations of that story, not excavated objects from ancient Troy. Seeing them provides a useful introduction to the relationship between the legend and the archaeological remains.

Choose the correct stop

For the ancient city, plan a visit to Troy near Tevfikiye. The ruins include settlement remains from different periods, defensive walls and areas such as the Houses of Troy and the sanctuary. Use the site’s visitor route and signs; the horse is only one part of a visit.

For the film horse, use the Çanakkale waterfront location. A waterfront photo stop and a visit to the archaeological site are different outings. Confirm which location a tour includes rather than assuming that every reference to the Trojan Horse means both.

Practical tips

Check current opening hours and admission for the ruins with the official operator before travel. Wear comfortable shoes, bring water and sun protection, and allow enough time to explore the site. Do not assume that climbing inside a replica is available; follow the barriers and staff instructions on the day.

Find a suitable itinerary

Compare Gallipoli and Troy itineraries and read the individual booking page for named stops and admission inclusions. A visit to Gallipoli, Troy or Çanakkale does not automatically include both horse replicas.
